It was announced by the Director of the Antarctic Institute of Ecuador. Maldonado station operates during the summer season since it was opened in 1990. It would begin to operate 12 months a year in 2016.
Ecuador officially announced the intention to increase its Antarctic activity by opening its research station in Antarctica Pedro Vicente Maldonado all year round. According to the information provided by the Ministry of Defense the station would begin to open during the 12 months of the year in 2016.
Maldonado station is the only Ecuadorian research base in Antarctica. It is located in the South Shetland Islands, in the northern region of the Antarctic Peninsula, in an area of high scientific activity and near to stations from other countries.
The Ecuadorean Antarctic Institute Director, José Olmedo, assured this decision will grant continuity to the studies that are carried out by the Ecuadorean scientists on Antarctic territory.
In order to make it possible for the station to operate permanently, Ecuador must adequate some of its facilities, mainly oriented to assure the supplies of goods and fuel to last one whole year.
“It is important to consider that during the winter season there is no chance for any kind of resupply since the sea water that surrounds the station freezes”, reminded Olmedo.
Ecuador started its Antarctic activity in 1987. In 1990, it started operating the scientific station Maldonado at Greenwich Island from where it develops research in biology, geology, glaciology and microbiology among other disciplines.
