After almost six month of scientific activities at Artigas Station, the Uruguayan researchers that participated in the last stage of the 2011 -2012 Antarctic summer campaign will return this week to their homes.
In approximately 10 days, the station will remain in hands of the 8 men crew that will keep it running until December.
These last days will be devoted to close and set up the research facilities that were used during the summer to stand the harsh months of the Antarctic winter, giving and end to the scientific activities in Antarctica for this year. Studies will continue at the Uruguayan research centers with the samples and information obtained in Antartica.
During this summer campaign, Uruguay refurbished some of the accommodations of the station that will be used during the winter stay over and set up new fuel tanks. The last activities to be conducted before returning to the continent are the maintenance of generators, which are the main source of energy for the station, and of the communications system.
This last flight also carries a film crew that will record 3D images of Antarctica and the station for the exhibition “Un viaje a la Antártida” that will take place at the Uruguayan Tehnology Laboratory.
Once the last flight of the season takes off, only an 8 men team will remain at the station to attend the basic activities and the collection of meteorological information.
